CONGRATULATIONS !!!

We have a lot of Congratulations to go around this month!

ASHLEY WESTBERG CLASSIC: We hosted the 9th Annual Ashley Westberg Classic, our home gymnastics meet for Levels 4 through Level 8, and the girls were awesome! Yea TEAM!!

We had 194 gymnasts from New Mexico and Texas compete here on Nov. 5th and 6th. This was the first meet for some gymnasts; the first meet at a NEW level for some; and some were returning veterans! A summary of the meet results with the highest score on an event can be found at www.gymmagic.com (go to the Special Announcements on the right and click on the ‘Ashley Westberg Results’). This was just an exceptional meet and we’re so proud of our gymnasts and coaches: Mariel Azcarate, Traci Galemore, Dom Simon, Alex Parrish and Robyn McNicholas (who was out for surgery on her shoulder).

Special THANKS to all the parents and gymnasts for a really great (and very busy) weekend: Terry Parrish (Meet Director), Terri Madrid, Rhonda Clow and Mike Kelley (Head Table), Briana Madrid (music), Trinity Brown (ribbons and medals), Jennifer and Andy Randall (scoring), and Erica Mock for singing the National Anthem, which was beautiful! GPA hosted the concession and also sold their Green Chile Chicken Soup Bowls at the Renaissance Fair! Talk about BUSY!!! But it was a great weekend and we’re just very proud of our gymnasts and coaches. We even earned a couple of Team Awards plus individual bests! Spectacular – we love those Angels! So Congratulations, Coaches & Gymnasts!!

CONGRATULATIONS also go out to our two former coaches who were recently married! We send our BEST WISHES to Natasha (Sweetser) and James Clayshulte. AND we have another wedding coming up this month: Ms. Jessica Franklin and Michael Covington. Our very BEST TO BOTH!!! ♥♥♥♥♥

ASHLEY’S GARDEN PRESCHOOL is also in the spotlight as they were recently awarded a 4 Star rating! They jumped right over the 3 Stars and are now also completing the inspection and licensing requirements for national accreditation through NAC. Please give Lucy Tamez and her staff a Big High FIVE: Cazandra, Cassie, Nicole, Tori and Suzanne with special thanks to our Educational Coordinator, Sandra Graham. They’ve all put in lots of extra time and effort to place Ashley’s Garden at the top! AWESOME! Congratulations, Ms. Lucy!!

Ashley’s Garden Preschool specializes in 3 to 5 year olds and offers the most outstanding program I’ve ever seen! If you have a child close to 3 years of age, you need to get on their wait list. These early childhood years are the important years for laying a great foundation for success and learning, and Ashley’s Garden provides an awesome program of pre-academics, ZooPhonics, S’cool Moves for integrative movement PLUS lessons in gymnastics, swimming and dance for a FUN-filled experience.

WINTER RECITAL!! Yes, it’s right around the corner, December 10th! The coaches and students have been working on the routines for a really super recital. We know it’s a busy time of the year, so we hope you can carve out a few hours on the 10th because recitals are truly special events for the kids. This gives them a wonderful opportunity to show off what they’ve been working on and gives them the ‘center stage’! We’ll have times posted as soon as possible, but our tentative start time will be around 11:00 on Dec. 10th.

TUTORING!! YES, Gym Magic offers a truly outstanding tutoring program in reading and language arts. Gym Magic’s program, Learning Foundations, provides a multi-level tutoring program that combines integrative movement with classroom instruction.
SWIM DURING THE WINTER AT GYM MAGIC! Yes, our students can swim ALL year round! And that’s just what the US Swim School Association suggests: once a week class all year round because experience has shown this is the BEST way to learn swimming. We focus on SAFETY first and follow it with FUN combined with SKILL. We maintain low student : teacher ratios and quality lessons. But did you know there’s an even greater reason to have your children involved in swimming, dance, cheer or gymnastics? Yep, they ALL provide brain organization!

CHEER ACADEMY & ALL STAR CHEER: I’m sure you’ve seen Xtreme All Stars working to perfect their routines for competition. BUT did you know we host a wide variety of classes for beginner to advanced cheerleaders? Our Cheer Academy has a great opportunity to work and consult with our competitive cheer staff headed by Jessica Franklin. We try to host a stunt or tumbling clinic each month. For November, a Back Handspring Clinic will be held on Nov. 12th from 10 to 12. See the office to sign-up. Come meet some the the NMSU Cheerleaders!

QUOTES OF THE DAY:

“Despite what we think, learning is not ‘all from our head’. It is the movements of our body…that form the pathways in our mind that we later use to read, write, and think in an imaginative and creative way”, states Susan R. Johnson, MD, FAAP (2006).

The fact that our children are not playing outdoors actually has far reaching consequences for their education and their ability to learn. Consider the following quote from noted neurobiologist, Carla Hannaford, PhD: “The more closely we consider the elaborate interplay of brain and body, the more clearly one compelling theme emerges: Movement is essential to learning. Movement awakens and activates many of our mental capacities”.

Research has demonstrated that the best predictors for success in reading and math are actually motor skills and eye-hand coordination. This is such an important insight when you realize that our kids today are growing up in a technological society that places great demands on classroom performance without providing adequate opportunities for motor skill and eye-hand coordination, which we now know greatly influences a child’s ability to learn with ease.

AND NOW: HOW ARE WE DOING?

It’s important to us to hear from YOU! What do you like BEST about class and what could we do to make the class better in your opinion? How is your interaction with our office, with your teacher?

REMEMBER: CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY CAMP! Ho, Ho, Ho!

Gym Magic opened its doors in 1993 with only a competitive gymnastics program. A recreational program soon followed, but the focus of Gym Magic was to create a program that dealt with the whole child and placed the primary focus on the over-all well being of the child. In essence, the child must come first followed by the sport. This philosophy has stayed with Gym Magic over the years and has helped to develop numerous individual and team championships in gymnastics, while also helping to develop some very wonderful young people! We now have the distinct pleasure of coaching the children of many of our former gymnasts which is, indeed, very gratifying.

Our very first team was a group of highly dedicated gymnasts that wanted to enjoy their sport, develop new skills plus be able to enjoy school and still be a ‘kid’ while competing and maintaining good grades. They are now dentists, physicians, moms, criminal justice professionals, fitness specialists and educators to name just a few of the professions they have entered. We are very proud of them and their continued contributions to society as we believe this is our true role – to develop strong young men and women who have the self-confidence to pursue their dreams and dream the ‘big dreams’!

If you join our competitive teams, you will soon find out that gymnastics develops so much more than a strong and flexible body – the major work is actually through the mental and emotional realms which is why we LOVE GYMNASTICS! Our Gym Magic staff is dedicated to the highest principles of gymnastics ethics. With over 100 years of combined coaching experience on staff, Gym Magic is ready and able to help athletes of all levels succeed. Every possible effort is made to ensure the health and well being of every athlete, physically, mentally and emotionally. We will provide a strong positive, safe environment where children can learn, laugh and grow.

We will help to develop body awareness, spatial awareness, balance, agility and a strong work ethic. We believe in a strong TEAM SPIRIT because it is through teamwork that individuals succeed both in gymnastics and in life, overall. We build strong character and self-esteem; we conduct evaluations of our gymnasts to identify individual ability to help them excel; and we desire open, honest discussions with our team parents. At Gym Magic, we want our athletes to get the most out of their gymnastics experience as this is a precious time in their lives.

We believe we reach our dreams through dedicated work mixed with fun. Fortunately, gymnasts usually LOVE gymnastics or they wouldn’t be here, which makes our jobs all the more enjoyable. Our athletes are encouraged to have fun and enjoy their accomplishments at all levels of competition, to support one another in their individual goals, and to respect themselves, their team and their gym. Gymnastics truly grows individuals from the ‘inside out’ because gymnasts will be faced with disappointment and with happiness, with failure and with success. We feel it’s important to experience these emotions in a safe, supportive environment where kids learn to get back on the beam, to get back on the bars and to get back in the game! Our students learn that success comes through small continual steps; that failure is on the path to success; and that you can only truly fail if you stop trying, so you just keep trying until you succeed. Did I mention patience? Competitive gymnastics is really good at developing patience because it is a very beautiful but difficult sport! COME JOIN US AND EXPERIENCE THE WONDER OF GYMNASTICS!

Introduction by Dr. Nancy L. Bates

Welcome to Learning Foundations. Learning Foundations grew out of the need to provide a different approach to tutoring that was based on the whole child and the process of learning. Our program is focused on elementary school students that need reading and language arts tutoring.

As a gym and sports center, we have something that other tutoring programs do not have: a kid-friendly, FUN environment filled with colorful mats and bouncy ‘things’! This is important because many struggling readers develop poor self-esteem over time and a FUN, colorful environment helps to set the stage for a New Beginning of reading and self-confidence!

Self-confidence and self-esteem are two words tossed around so frequently they have lost much of their impact, but they are, indeed, important issues for our children. After just a few short weeks of tutoring, we’ve had numerous parents comment on their child’s improved attitude about themselves, their abilities and how they felt about school in general. We think everyone deserves a healthy, positive attitude about learning because this lays the foundation for a life-long pursuit of learning.

If a child has been identified as needing tutoring, you can be sure that that child is aware they are behind and in need of help. Their parents may also be desperate to find help as most parents understand the importance of education and being a good reader. Many students will feel deflated and defeated by school. To change their attitude is to win the first major battle!

Learning Foundations can be a golden opportunity for students and their parents because our students aren’t thrown into yet another classroom where they are made to sit still and try to learn. Our students start out in a FUN place, our gym, doing FUN activities that allow them to be just another kid, not the kid who can’t read very well.

In short time, they gain new skills in the gym (which are, of course, directed at building brain organization and planned motor skills through integrative movement – known as serious FUN) and begin to RELAX! They soon experience that ‘learning’ can actually be fun and that they are, indeed, capable of improving their reading and thus their school work.

Gym time is extremely valuable time!! This is where we find out that many of these students cannot skip, do jumping jacks, jump rope or play hopscotch. Again, this relates to the fact that today’s youth are not outside playing anymore; they’re the generation that has grown up watching TV and playing on computers. They are also the group that might have missed a number of important developmental steps that provide ease of learning because the brain is organized through early play (motor activities developing into planned motor skills). As so aptly stated by Dr. Carla Hannaford, “Learning involves the building of skills, and skills of every manner are built through the movement of muscles – not just physical skills for athletes…but also the intellectual skills used in classrooms and workplaces.”

Deb Wilson, reading specialist and the co-founder of S’cool Moves, states “Movement is the architect of a child’s brain. The two hemispheres of the brain are designed to constantly communicate with one another. The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, and vice versa. Bilateral activities, common to all gymnastics programs, require both sides of the body to work together and separately. Coordinated movement patterns create efficiency in the brain. Efficient pathways create fluent readers who complete reading tasks with ease. For example, during reading, the left hemisphere attends to letters and the sequence of words, while the right side of the brain focuses on comprehending what is read. Reading fluency depends on an intimate conversation between the two hemispheres of the brain– a clear signal, just like a smart phone.”

Researchers have even documented that graduating seniors will have more hours in front of TVs than the total number of hours spent in a classroom after 12 full years of school. An amazing statistic! Most everyone is also aware of the poor showing US students have had in international testing for a number of years now. It appears we have not turned that around yet, but it is gaining much national attention and the poor performance of our schools has been in the spotlight. Change and improvement may be in the wind!

Learning Foundations provides a proven method, a method we have developed and adapted after working with hundreds and hundreds of students. We use a nationally recognized reading program that has been adapted for our program. This is combined with integrative movement in the gym to provide bilateral activities, improve balance, rhythm, timing and core musculature – activities that impact learning and especially reading.

SES TUTORING

Gym Magic was awarded a SES grant to offer the Learning Foundations curriculum in reading and language arts to eligible students. Students must be attending eligible Title 1 schools within LCPS. SES is a totally FREE TUTORING program. A list of eligible schools can be found at the LCPS website under Federal Grants, SES (Supplemental Educational Services).

For 2011-2012, the sign up period is from October 24 – November 22. Applications are distributed to each eligible school and must be returned to either the student’s teacher or principal prior to the cut-off date. It is recommended that interested parents return their completed applications as soon as possible as space is typically limited.

Gym Magic hires local, certified teachers that are then trained in our method. We use small groups (3 students per teacher) as we have found this provides just the right balance of individual attention plus small group dynamics. Each student has an individualized program with weekly progress programs provided both to the district and to the parents.

Gym Magic is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 7:30pm and on Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00pm. Parents and students are welcome to tour the facility. For additional information, please call Ms. Graham or Dr. Bates at Gym Magic (575.523.1616).

Unfazed by the loss of Beijing Olympic captain Alicia Sacramone, the Americans won their third title at the world gymnastics championships Tuesday night with a commanding performance that lets everyone know they’re the team to beat next summer in London.

The Americans scored 179.411 points, finishing a whopping 4 points ahead of Russia, last year’s champion. To get an idea of just how big the rout was, think of the severe beatings that college football powerhouses put on their nonconference opponents and you get the idea. Even the Russians had to applaud as the Americans finished on floor exercise, the gold medal already decided.

As the last notes of Aly Raisman’s music faded, the Americans jumped up and down and exchanged hugs. They gave a big cheer of “U-S-A!” as they waited for Raisman’s score, then walked off the floor, index fingers held high in the air.

Las Cruces, NM – On Sept. 17, 2011 at 11:00AM, fifty-eight gymnasts from Gym Magic (plus a few swimmers with handstands in the pool) helped the USA regain the WORLD RECORD for most handstands performed simultaneously. 20,478 gymnasts and fans from more than 300 gymnastics clubs and locations nationwide joined together to bring the title back to the United States. The prior record of 2,402 was set by Australian gymnasts in Melbourne to promote the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships. “We (USA) originally set the record of 1,072, in Indianapolis, in July 2005 as part of the run-up to the 2005 Visa Championships,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “Bringing the title back to the USA is a great way to celebrate National Gymnastics Day across the U.S. and help build awareness and support for gymnastics.”

Gym Magic was proud to represent Las Cruces in NGD and help the US take back the world record!

Each year, USA Gymnastics celebrates National Gymnastics Day to build awareness of the sport and support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Money raised benefits Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in each club’s local community. Since 2001, gymnastics clubs across the country have raised more than $1.4 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The clubs have until Nov. 9 to raise and submit their funds for this year.
